I remember being on a patrol in some woods near the Ardennes. The snow was thick on the ground and there was some dog that wouldn't shut up! I smelled a cooking fire and set out on my own away from the security of our camp to investigate. A few hundred yards out, I slipped on some ice and rolled down a hill into a gulley. When I woke up, I was in a hole and very cold. My clothes had been torn and the smell of food was growing fainter. It seemed like years, but I was trapped in that hole for over four hours. Do you know what could have happened to me in FOUR HOURS!!! Then came the boot steps. I knew I was saved because it was the Americans, and they always had food. After two days, I had nearly eaten their weekly rations and they were forced to put me in chains.
Times were rough. It had been over one day since I had been placed in chains. The Americans looked real hungry and were starting to nod off more and more. The artillery had been keeping everyone up at night… or maybe that was my snoring, that part is still sort of fuzzy to me. I heard small arms fire erupt in the distance. It was a rescue attempt! Then I heard something moving behind me. When I saw Jimbo, Frink, and DJQ, I knew something had gone terribly wrong. Who was leading the men? Without their participation in the assault, the Americans took out our squad with ease. Besides that, the only other time the four of us have been together was that time in Algiers. Mistakes were made. However all records of that incident have been deleted from our records so that all sides might retain their dignity. Anyway, long story short, they rescued me and then the four of us buried the rest of our squad, stole civilian clothes, and hitchhiked our way to Switzerland to wait out the war… or that's what we should've done. D'OH!
